"In America, the president reigns for four years, and journalism governs forever and ever."
- Oscar Wilde
Journalism is the fourth pillar of democracy. It endows people with the right to human experience, opinion, and freedom of speech. Journalism is not merely a medium of expression. It is a tool with the power to influence. It holds the power to be a beacon of hope for the oppressed, and a voice of the mute. Adversely, it can be a weapon of disinformation and delusion.
The media shapes the way we perceive, opine, and decide. It shapes the geopolitical landscape by influencing public opinion and unbiased minds. Now, just imagine a parallel universe in which journalism does not exist.
In a world without journalism, you might know who’s running for president but not what they truly stand for, you might know of political or corporate violations but not how to bring them to light, you would be vulnerable to manipulation without having a clue about it, much less fighting back. In a world without journalism there would be chaos.
Very few approach journalism for what it should be, a powerful force of unity and brotherhood. Prejudice, propaganda, censorship, and inaccurate representation have begun to throw a gloomy, cloudy shadow over this once-sacred form of media. The negative connotation of journalism is due to the mass spread of disinformation. A once noble profession, journalism, is now corrupted due to political influence and propaganda.
